EnergySolutions is the largest commercial processor of radioactive waste in the USA. Its facility at Bear Creek, Tennessee offers some unique opportunities for treatments to minimise waste volumes for disposal. Its fully-licensed site has been working with European clients for over 15 years. It is important to note that EnergySolutions does not dispose of radioactive wastes of non-US origin in the USA. As described below, EnergySolutions recycles metals within the nuclear industry or returns waste after processing material for volume reduction.

Metal Melt

Radioactive scrap is shipped from Europe and used to manufacture a shielding block product for sale to nuclear facilities: saving disposal capacity and cost
Higher radioactive content is acceptable compared to the European offering, namely recycling for free release: activated and contaminated scrap is accepted
Pay once and the disposal problem is gone
Large pieces (~15 tons) are acceptable
~2,000 tons of metal recycled from Europe so far

Incineration

Combustible radioactive waste is shipped from Europe, then burned and the ash returned to the country of origin
Normally more than 90% volume reduction is achieved
Complex waste forms can also be processed subject to acceptance conditions
Tritium and C-14 abatement minimises emissions
100 tons+ shipped from Europe so far
